Golf Swing Lesson: Learn from the Pro’s and Develop Your Game

2009 November 8

There are two principles that much be mastered by the student in any golf swing lesson, to achieve a great overall technique. These are balance and rhythm. To take your game up a couple of notches, these must become like second nature. Your consistency and confidence will grow dramatically when you have control of these two elements. Rhythm is the ability to repeat the same action again and again and with the same speed. The ability to maintain stability during each stage of the stroke, from the teeing up stage to completion, is what we mean by balance.

Watching professional players as often as possible is a really useful way to learn how they develop their own personal golf swing technique. Often, they go through a similar set number of steps so they have the correct mind-set for the shot. With visualisation, the sports psychologists focus the student on ’seeing’ the perfect shot in advance to help them create poise and balance. This helps the student approach the set-up for the, shot knowing what they want to achieve in advance.

Over-swinging is a frequent mistake when trying to master the correct technique. The thinking is that to achieve a longer distance shot, that an increased arc of the club and faster speed of follow through is needed. The result is frequently a poor connection with the ball, due to an incorrect alignment of the face of the club. It is the length of time that the face of the club is in connection with the ball that is important, not just the speed. The aim should be not to take the club back further than you can rotation of your shoulders. Once these foundations are in place then the distance factor will come by default.

With a daily practice routine, it should be possible to achieve good results. This will also help train and strengthen your muscles for a wider stretch and improved control. Also, remember that there is a huge resource of e-books, videos and tutorials on the internet that can help give you new ideas and techniques. When you have some of the theory and practice in place, it may then be a good time to have a golf swing lesson with a local professional. You will feel more in control of your game in time and achieve some independence where you can analyse and correct your golf swing.

Lastly, it is important to warm-up and stretch properly before starting a game or practice session. Not only will this help protect you from muscle and joint damage, but your golf swing will be much more ‘fluid.
